CIOs and IT Professionals as Change Agents, Risk and Stakeholder Managers: A Field Study

The changing roles and responsibilities of CIOs and IT professionals refl ect strategic and political changes occurring in organizations. To meet client performance and business demands, CIOs and IT staff are required to solve business needs underlying technical solutions. This article reports that CIO and IT professional roles and competencies are changing to include more change and risk management, business problemsolving, and selling ideas at the project and other organizational levels. This shift requires different and new skills and training for IT professionals. The purpose of this article is to identify and report on observed roles and responsibilities of CIOs and IT professionals from a fi eld study. Our focus is on large IT systems related projects. Secondly, we argue from our fi ndings and current research that CIOs and IT professionals require access to enterprise strategy and decision-making in order to succeed in implementing client projects.
